Mecpow is refreshing its entry-level range with the X3S, available with 7W or 12W of optical power. Announced in July 2026, this open-frame engraver offers a 360 x 360 mm work area, speeds up to 10,000 mm/min, Wi-Fi and an optional extension that increases the Y axis to 730 mm. Prices start at $196.99. The X3S modernises the original X3, but its exposed architecture still requires a properly controlled laser workspace.
A compact, expandable open frame
The X3S is delivered 50% pre-assembled. Mecpow estimates roughly ten minutes for final assembly, which seems plausible for anyone familiar with aluminium profiles and belt-driven machines. It remains important to check that the gantry is square, the belts are correctly tensioned and both axes move without tight spots before the laser is powered.
The standard 360 x 360 mm work area is smaller than the X3 Pro’s, but large enough for many signs, panels and craft projects. The optional EX3 extension increases the Y dimension to 730 mm, making longer signs and small production batches possible. Engraved rulers on the rails help with rough manual positioning, although there is no built-in camera in the base configuration.

7W for detail, 12W for more cutting power
X3S 7W: Mecpow quotes a 0.05 x 0.07 mm laser spot. The smaller spot should favour fine engraving and occasional cutting of thin materials.
X3S 12W: two diode beams are combined into 12W of optical output, with a quoted spot of 0.06 x 0.08 mm. Mecpow publishes settings for cutting up to 10 mm basswood in one pass. This remains a manufacturer result that will depend on the exact sheet, air assist, focus and lens condition.
Optional infrared module: a separate 1.2W source is intended to extend marking to certain metals and plastics. It is not included in the base prices.
Maximum speed of 10,000 mm/min: both versions share this advertised engraving limit and a claimed motion precision of 0.01 mm. Actual cutting speeds will be substantially lower.
Modern control options: Mecpow lists USB-C, Wi-Fi and TF-card control, together with LightBurn, LaserGRBL and the MKSLaser application on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.

Price and availability
Mecpow’s official comparison guide sets out the differences between the two versions. When this English edition was checked, the X3S 7W was listed at $196.99 but marked sold out. The X3S 12W was listed at $254.99 as a pre-order, with shipping expected around late July 2026. Pricing, availability and bundle contents may change quickly during the launch period.
No independent publication has yet produced a full hands-on review of a final X3S unit. Cutting capacities, setup time and long-term mechanical reliability should therefore be treated as Mecpow claims until retail machines have been tested.
Limited protection on an open-frame machine
The colored cover around the laser module reduces some direct and reflected light, but it does not turn the X3S into an enclosed Class 1 appliance. Powerful diode lasers can cause permanent eye and skin injury, ignite materials and produce hazardous fumes.
The tilt sensor, limit switches and physical power control are useful safeguards, but they do not replace a complete enclosure, proper extraction, controlled access and constant supervision. PVC and unidentified materials must not be processed because they may release toxic or corrosive gases. The French INRS laser-safety guidance provides a useful overview of optical-radiation risks, but users must also follow the manufacturer’s manual and their local regulations.






Is the Mecpow X3S a worthwhile update?
The X3S updates Mecpow’s inexpensive open-frame formula with Wi-Fi, USB-C and an optional large-format extension. The 7W version appears better suited to fine engraving, while the 12W model offers more headroom for cutting. The entry prices are attractive, but a suitable enclosure, extraction, air assist and accessories can increase the real budget substantially.
The main unknown is practical performance. Mecpow’s specifications are coherent, but there are no independent X3S tests yet to confirm its cutting claims, assembly quality or durability. For an experienced user prepared to build a safe workstation, it looks like an affordable platform. A complete beginner should include the cost and complexity of laser safety in the decision rather than judging the machine by its headline price alone.
