The Bambu Lab X2D is an enclosed CoreXY printer with two very different nozzles. The primary toolhead uses direct drive for speed and material flexibility, while the auxiliary nozzle is supplied through an external Bowden extruder. This arrangement can print a model and its supports with less purging than a single-nozzle material changer, at a launch price of $649.
The X2D succeeds the X1 Carbon rather than simply adding another AMS. It also brings active chamber heating, improved filtration, quick-swap hardened nozzles and updated sensing to the familiar 256 mm format.

Two nozzles, two roles
The main nozzle is the faster all-rounder. The auxiliary nozzle tops out at a lower practical flow and speed, but it can hold a support material or contrasting filament while the primary nozzle prints the part. That avoids unloading and reloading the same hotend at every tool change and can sharply reduce purge towers and waste on the right model.
It is not a zero-waste system. Priming, wiping and color contamination still require some material, and a multi-color print using the AMS can still generate purge. The benefit is strongest for two-material jobs, especially when a dedicated support interface makes removal easier.
Enclosure, chamber and material support
The active chamber can reach a stated 65 C, with a 300 C hotend and a 120 C bed. This broadens the range from PLA, PETG and TPU to ABS, ASA, PC and selected nylon filaments. The enclosure and improved filtration are useful for temperature stability, but users should still ventilate when printing materials that emit fumes.
The auxiliary Bowden path introduces a clear compromise. Tom’s Hardware found that normal TPU is not a natural fit for this second extruder, and the auxiliary nozzle is slower than the direct-drive primary toolhead. It can also reduce maximum Z clearance by about 4 mm when installed.

Price and independent reviews
The standalone printer launched at $649, with the X2D Combo and AMS 2 Pro at $899. European launch prices were approximately €629 and €849 respectively. Those figures place the X2D below many dual-extrusion machines, although spare nozzles and additional AMS hardware increase the final cost.
Tom’s Hardware praised the dual nozzle, heated chamber, filtration and general ease of use, but highlighted the limitations of the Bowden auxiliary extruder. TechRadar ran the machine for more than 250 hours across PLA, PETG, carbon-filled material, TPU and mixed-material projects, reporting exceptional consistency and no print failures during that test period. That is much stronger evidence than launch claims alone.





Is the X2D a meaningful upgrade?
For an X1 Carbon owner who rarely prints support interfaces or multiple materials, the improvement may not justify replacing a working machine. For schools, studios and engineering users that regularly combine rigid and support materials, the second nozzle can save both time and filament.
The X2D’s appeal is the balance: strong independent reliability, familiar software and useful dual-material capability at a relatively accessible price. The auxiliary nozzle is deliberately less capable than the primary one, so buyers should judge it as a specialised second tool rather than two identical high-speed extruders.
